Myrtis J. Brown

 

Myrtis Brown is the Assistant-Coordinator for Chicago Public Schools Student-Teaching Initiative. This program is designed to attract pre-service teachers from Chicago-area universities, as well as in-state and out-of-state schools of education, by offering support and guidance through the final phase of the traditional teacher certification process. Myrtis collaborates with the coordinator of the program to implement the goals of the program and serves as a liaison between UIC and CPS schools in the ST2 – Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant. Myrtis is a lifelong resident of Chicago and a product of the Chicago Public Schools.

Myrtis is a retired CPS teacher who has returned to work for CPS. Prior to her retirement Myrtis enjoyed a long and successful career of 37 years within CPS as a teacher. Myrtis taught history and social studies at Hirsch Metro High School and South Shore Community High School. In addition to her teaching experiences, Myrtis also served as a professional development coordinator, after school learning community facilitator, curriculum writer, new teacher trainer/ mentor and regional coordinator for teacher recertification. As a staff development coordinator Myrtis has presented workshops on classroom management, active teaching strategies and standards –based instruction at the school, district and citywide levels to both teachers and administrators. As a consultant she also has helped schools write and develop their school improvement plans (SIPPAA).

Her love for teaching and passion for learning have formed a framework for two important concepts which have shaped her career as a professional educator: All students can learn; teacher learning and growth are essential to maximize student achievement. Myrtis has a deep commitment to urban education and the realities of multiculturalism. As a lifelong learner she has a strong interest in supporting educators to become exceptional teachers and mentors. Myrtis received her B.A. from Northern Illinois University and has a M.A. from Columbia College.

Myrtis was selected to a Senior Global Affairs Fellow -Foreign Policy Association (1994-1997) and was honored as Teacher of the Year Chatham –Avalon Community Organization (1981). Myrtis has three daughters and is a proud grandmother
