Chicago Center for Early Education

Under Mayor Daley's innovative plan, "Setting A Course for Early Child Care and Education in Chicago", the Center for Literacy and the Chicago Department of Human Services, were charged with establishing a resource center to serve all early childhood professionals in Chicago.

Mission

The Chicago Center for Early Education (CCEE) will provide Chicago’s early childhood community with resources and training materials based on current research and best practices to promote high-quality education for young children.  The resource center will provide a comprehensive collection of multi-media resources to help parents and educators with child care and family issues.  The facility includes library resources, computer lab, workspace and equipment area, and training facilities.

Goals

  • Increase the resource materials that are available to early child care and education programs that serve children ages birth through 8 years to improve education quality.
  • Provide accessibility of information on parenting issues to support child and family needs.
  • Promote the use of technology to access early childhood information and resources.
  • Support local educational and networking opportunities for the early childhood community by providing meeting and training space.

Resource Materials

The center offers a comprehensive collection of materials on early childhood issues, from birth to age eight.  Adult and children’s books, periodicals, reports, manuals, activity boxes, videos, audio tapes, and computer software are all available.  Resources are cataloged for easy access and materials are loaned to card holders, with the exception of software which must be used on site.  Anyone can apply for the free Chicago Center for Early Education card and begin checking out materials.

Workspace & Training Areas

Parents, teachers, groups, and organizations are encouraged to use the workspace and training/meeting areas at the center.  The facility can accommodate groups up to 30 people.  There is no fee to use the training space, but reservations must be made in advance.  Available equipment includes overhead, 35mm and LCD projectors, TV-VCR, Smartboard, laminator, scanner, bookfinder, paper trimmer, and letter press.

Computer Lab

The center’s 15 stations provide access to the World Wide Web, email, word processing, and other software applications.  Visitors are welcome to use the computers for research, study, and preparation of materials.  Training sessions are held to help parents and teachers navigate early childhood sites on the Internet.  Reservations can be made for group use of the computer lab.
