William
Teale is Professor of Education and Chair of the Department of Curriculum
and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he is
also Director of the UIC Reading Clinic. He teaches literacy methods
courses in the preservice teacher education program, courses in reading
diagnosis and correction, and advanced seminars in early and emergent
literacy. Dr. Teale is internationally known for his research on emergent
literacy and has worked with schools across the United States, as well as
with Children's Television Workshop, public libraries, Head Start, public
television stations, Reach Out and Read, and child care organizations in
developing curriculum and programs focused on preschool and primary grade
literacy development. The book Emergent Literacy: Writing and Reading,
which he co-edited with Elizabeth Sulzby, is in its 6th reprinting and
has become a standard reference in the field of early literacy. Professor
Teale also served for seven years as editor of Language Arts and is
currently co-editor of the Illinois Reading Council Journal.
Dr.
Teale's current major research project focuses on teacher education in
beginning literacy instruction. Case Technologies to Enhance Literacy
Learning (CTELL) is a five-year project funded by the National Science
Foundation designed to investigate the effects of using web-based video
cases in preservice literacy methods courses. The main question examined
is whether such materials can significantly enhance preservice teachers'
knowledge of how to teach beginning reading and writing and have a
positive effect on how such teachers actually teach children once they
are employed in a classroom. More information on this project can be
found at http://www.edci.uconn.edu/ctell.
