AmeriCorps: Project MORE
AmeriCorps is a national service program where members serve in partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups to address critical needs in communities across America. The Center for Literacy's Project MORE members work with Chicago's Head Start families to support parents desires to develop lifelong learning opportunities while also developing strategies to support their children’s early literacy skills. Project MORE members are recruited from the community and are placed with Center for Literacy programs, specifically the Family Start Learning Centers (FAST) and the Chicago Center for Early Education (CCEE). In addition to an AmeriCorps monthly living allowance and an education award, Project MORE members gain valuable training and work experience through the program as GED and ESL tutors, computer instructors, and family literacy workshop leaders. They work one-on-one with Center for Literacy Staff to ensure high quality programs are provided to the Head Start community.
Lean all about AmeriCorps and Project MORE's activities through their informative newsletter Links to Literacy. Links to Literacy was created to highlight service projects in which AmeriCorps members participate in. These include: special activities and stories such as the AmeriCorps Opening Day Ceremony, Book-A-Mania, Martin Luther King Service Day, Student Spotlights, Financial Literacy and a calendar of events.
