About Our Services:
Writing is one of the most important skills that students take away from college. To help students learn about writing, UIC offers a special free resource, a peer writing center, where students work with other students to improve as writers.

  • Though we take drop ins, tutors are in demand so it is best to make an appointment (312-413-2206).
  • Appointments are 50 minutes long and begin on the hour. Students are responsible for canceling appointments. If demand is high, we need to give away appointments when students are late.
  • Please bring a hard copy of your paper and the instructor's description of the writing assignment.
  • Tutors can assist you with all aspects of your writing, including brainstorming, outlining, revising and editing. Learning is most productive when students actively participate in their tutoring. The most substantial changes in writing are made early in the writing process. Come early!
  • Students are allowed to make up to two appointments per week. We cannot make back to back appointments, because we must leave room for other students.
  • Be a tutor! All students who received an A or a B in English 161 (or the equivalent) are invited to apply for English 222, our tutor training course. Being a tutor is a great way to learn more about writing, help other students, and gain valuable professional experience.
  • The Writing Center has many student run publications for fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. When you visit us, make sure to find out more about opportunities for getting some of your writing into print.

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, class, religion, gender,
or ability, and we expect the students who visit us to treat tutors with the same  respect.
